The Department of Transport has announced the commencement dates for the AARTO Act, marking a significant shift in South Africa’s road safety regulation. The rollout will occur in phases:
- Key Implementation Dates:
- December 1, 2025: AARTO will come into effect in 69 metros and municipalities, covering general rollout, infringement notices, and penalties.
- April 1, 2026: The system will expand to 144 additional municipalities.
- The driving demerit system will be implemented nationwide September 1, 2026,
The AARTO system aims to enhance road safety and discipline among drivers, with penalties and allocating demerit points for traffic infringements -the Demerit Points System. Accumulating points beyond the threshold can lead to license suspension or cancellation.
